Day 12: Yellowstone! Geysers!

Prior to this trip, Billy did some amazing work to secure reservations for us at 4 different locations in the park. Finding suitable accommodations for 13 people at reasonable rates is not an easy task! Especially when much of the park is booked nearly a year in advance! Billy called each day and kept a spreadsheet of whom he spoke to at Yellowstone reservations, what their interests were, and what new information he gleaned from each of them. It was an exercise in diligence and it paid off with great accommodations each night, at unique places. He even had the foresight to cancel the campsite we had for one of the nights after noting that overnight lows were remaining in the high 20's or low 30's as early June turned into late June. Well done, brother!

We woke up Monday morning at the Grant Village Lodge relatively near both the South Entrance and Old Faithful. We even got to sleep in a bit which was lucky because Danny shared my bed and he might be the wiggliest sleeper on the planet.

Our first stop was Old Faithful, the most famous, and apparently reliable, geyser at Yellowstone.

Mary has grown since we last came to Old Faithful 2 years ago!

Mary is a bit more entertaining now than when she was 9 months old, making her big cousin Molly crack up in hysterics.

We decided to take the road less traveled and hike along the backside of Old Faithful to see the many other, lesser-known, less-reliable geysers with names like Beehive, Goggles, Infant,
Spasmodic, and Aurum.

Then we all sat down to watch the eruption from slightly afar

(My poor mom has gone through more Puffs Plus than a person ever should need.)

Then we were treated to a rainbow!

Time for lunch! Delicious grilled chicken sandwiches and leftover pizza from Salt Lake City

The kids went on a hunt for bear clues.

Then time to climb trees!

Finally off to an afternoon drive down Firehole Canyon, with a beautiful river, waterfalls, and an impressive canyon.

Then Molly took my camera for me to take pictures around the Lower Geyser Basin while I stayed behind in the car with a sleeping Mary.

Molly is quite the budding photographer!

Em, Liam, Marta and Sam take a break

Driving back to the Old Faithful Inn for a lovely dinner to celebrate Dad's birthday without bears, we see this bison... and the man standing waaaaaaay too close to a wild bison. People can be not-so-smart.

Following an impressive dual-meltdown by my two angels, Mary fell asleep less than 10 minutes before dinner, so into the sling she went, sleeping soundly through much of dinner.

But she was ready for play after dinner!

On the way back to the cars, we came across these clouds:

Sure enough, it started hailing! It calmed to a downpour followed by a chilly rain. We waved as we passed the campsite where we were originally supposed to stay that night. Thank you, Billy, for making THAT change!

Day 11: to Yellowstone! And Dad's 64th birthday!

7 uninterrupted hours of sleep!!! 7 uninterrupted hours of sleep!!!  I woke up at the Springhill Suites in
Salt Lake City feeling human again. After another awesome free hotel breakfast (these are the best, particularly when you have 14 people sleeping in 3 rooms!), we said goodbye to Jim as he left for the airport to fly back to Boston to work for the week. The remaining 13 of us, including my parents joining us in our van, set off north for Idaho and Wyoming. We stopped in Idaho Falls for an awesomely efficient grocery store run, then in McCammon, Idaho, aka middle-of-nowhere, for a gas fill-up, which was almost a call to AAA gas fill-up. That was exciting!! Then finally to Wyoming and some crazy 10% grade declines down a mountain. Note to self: service breaks when we get home. Finally, we arrived in the Grand Tetons, my first time ever at this insanely beautiful park.

Time for a birthday picnic dinner! Grilled chicken and salad!

(P.S. Billy, I love your shirt!)

Happy birthday, Dad!

Dinner was exciting as we were joined by a mule deer....

...and then a bear and her cub!

That visit ended our dinner a bit earlier than planned. The bears were maybe 25 yards away, looking for dinner of their own. We cleared out, just in case Mary looked tasty. Speaking of Mary, she was REALLY mad when I scooped her up as she was running toward the bear because "I want to see Yogi, mommy!!"

Once the excitement ended and the bears were finally left alone to forage (despite the group of people stalking the creatures. And you wonder how bear attacks happen?), we got back in the cars and said goodbye to the Tetons.

Sunset over Yellowstone Lake upon arrival in the park. Aaaahhhhh

Total miles driven: 384.7
Zero children eaten by bears
Danny's proclamation for the day: "I'm kind of scaed of nature."

Day 10: Arches to Salt Lake City

As great as Billy's 40th birthday celebration was, the campsite left a bit to be desired. Like not being overrun by tiny gnat-like bugs everywhere. And not waking up to find the base of our tent covered in ants (outside only, thank God!) And we made the rookie mistake of camping in a warm, dry place by not placing our rain fly on the tent for insulation nor dressing appropriately for the falling overnight temperature. Who knew 60 in the desert could feel so cold?! So, it wasn't our best night's sleep on the trip (and, Mary awoke 3 times between 11 and 6.) Oh well! Lessons learned.

None of those little annoyances mattered because we were heading south to Arches, one of my favorite places on earth.

Balanced Rock

Delicate Arch

It was warm, and with a bunch of tired kids, we opted to take the easier paths to view Delicate Arch, as opposed to the 3-mike roundtrip hike. It's such a gorgeous park that I can't wait to visit again soon!

Here's a portrait of Jim and the kids by the Delicate Arch viewpoint.

You don't see Mary, you say? Note the pink shoe hanging down by Jim's left hand.

After her late and brief night's sleep, she was a bit tired...

Okay, REALLY tired!

Even though she's technically in the picture, I'm betting we won't use this one for the Christmas card this year.

Liam calls this one Jabba the Hut

Cousins!

Goodbye for now, Arches. See you again!

Fun fact: yesterday we drove 321.4 miles. Today we drove 322.

After picnicking at The Devil's Campground, we headed north toward Salt Lake City, stopping in Orem, Utah to attend 5:30 mass at St. Francis of Assisi, a lovely parish that had mass at the perfect time for us to stop while passing through. We arrived at 5:29. It was awesome last-minute logistical planning/luck/divine intervention.

We ordered dinner from Big Daddy's Pizza, had it deivered to the hotel, and it arrived shortly after we checked in and unloaded the bags. Perfect!

Next stop: Yellowstone via the Grand Tetons and Idaho!
